Reel Adventures of Fly Fishing
When I started fishing from my kayak, I carried everything except for my waders. I could barely paddle and my line often got caught and tangled.
I quickly learned how to keep it simple but effective, by scaling down and putting all my gear into one low-profile box. The video below give a brief overview of what’s in the fly box that I use for bass and panfish.
What’s in your fly box?
When I bought my first kayak I hadn’t even considered the option of using it for fishing. I bought a 10′ closed-cockpit yak for lake and river paddling, and it served me well for 3 years. When I decided to try kayak angling, I didn’t want to buy a new one until I knew that I would enjoy it.
I searched the Internet for a rod holder and decided on a Scottys. It mounted on top with a couple of bolts, and allowed me to change the angle at which the rod was carried.
After a summer of use I’m happy to say that I made the right choice. It has been easy to use and allows me to quickly switch from casting to paddling with little effort.
They’re available from a number of sites, including Ebay. Make sure when you’re ordering that you have the right model number depending on whether you’re using a spinning rod or fly rod. Also be sure that you have the right base. Some models are meant to be attached to boat railings.
