For the fourth show we had four members of the Croton Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited join me. We covered fishing the watershed, Trout In The Classroom, Project Healing Waters, fly tying and other topics. It was great time.

If you’ve read the posts about my first and second shows on local cable access, then you might want to see the finished product.

For the past few years I’ve considered hosting a fly fishing show. I’m not exactly sure why, given the saturation of high quality, commercially-backed fishing programs readily available on most major networks. I am completely sure that I don’t have the chops to compete with Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston or Mike Iaconelli. But then again, you have to start somewhere. . .
In the past I’ve volunteered at local cable access channels, handling camera work and sound for a variety of projects including talk shows, music acts and quilt makers (who have a rabid following). So when I had the opportunity to create and host a fly fishing show on Public Access Channel 8 in Carmel NY, I decided to give it a try.
I departed from the FinFollower moniker and called the show “On The Fly”. No need to sully the FinFollower name in case it didn’t turn out as planned.
I’d recently seen a great presentation on fly fishing the East Branch of the Croton River given by Frank DeGrazio from Anglers Den in Pawling. Frank is an experienced guide who fishes many of the waters in the area. I contacted him and he agreed to be my first guest.
Despite some early technical difficulties, the show came out looking great. Frank came through with a solid presentation. He really knows his stuff and easily handled the unrehearsed Q&A that I threw at him.
I also want to thank the crew, which consisted mainly of local teens who volunteered for this assignment. I was impressed with their professionalism, approach and organization. They handled the camera, lighting, sound, set design and kept us all in focus and on track. They really made the difference.
Right now the program is only available through Public Access Channel 8, but I’m hoping it will find its way to Youtube or Vimeo soon.
Plans are in the works for a second show, so stay tuned. Enjoy!
Back in September I mentioned that George Douglas had finished his latest flyfishing work, The Fishing Gods. I’m happy to say that he sent an advance copy for our review.
The Fishing Gods gives a glimpse into the personal profiles and experiences from some of the nation’s finest guides, proving both insight and entertainment. The foreword is by writer, photographer and ex-steelhead guide by Dec Hogan.
As George describes it, “True stories of each fishing guide unfold the details of their humble beginnings and the paths they took that led them to the top of the fly fishing world. The Fishing Gods highlights each angler’s fishing philosophies, their most reliable techniques, and their favorite “go-to” flies–all of which have been reproduced, photographed, with step-by-step instructions by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard. I am deeply appreciative having had the opportunity to connect with, and work with, all of these extraordinary guides–those who have been blessed by The Fishing Gods.”
The book contains a number of interesting stories and profiles, including:
– Lori-Ann Murphy, who guided Leigh Perkins (owner and chairman of Orvis) and also was an adviser on the Kevin Bacon/Meryl Streep movie, The River Wild
– Fred Telleen, who guides for giant rainbows on the Kenai River in Alaska
– Rachel Finn, who uses her Master in Fine Arts degree from Yale for understanding the nuances of fly fishing
And guides stories are only part of the content. Fly tying recipes, ranging from the Ausable Bomber to the UV Groovy Bunny Sculpin are also included. All of the step by step fly patterns were recreated and photographed by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard.
The Fishing Gods is a quick and enjoyable read, filled with over 500 years of experience.
