Back in September I mentioned that George Douglas had finished his latest flyfishing work, The Fishing Gods. I’m happy to say that he sent an advance copy for our review.
The Fishing Gods gives a glimpse into the personal profiles and experiences from some of the nation’s finest guides, proving both insight and entertainment. The foreword is by writer, photographer and ex-steelhead guide by Dec Hogan.
As George describes it, “True stories of each fishing guide unfold the details of their humble beginnings and the paths they took that led them to the top of the fly fishing world. The Fishing Gods highlights each angler’s fishing philosophies, their most reliable techniques, and their favorite “go-to” flies–all of which have been reproduced, photographed, with step-by-step instructions by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard. I am deeply appreciative having had the opportunity to connect with, and work with, all of these extraordinary guides–those who have been blessed by The Fishing Gods.”
The book contains a number of interesting stories and profiles, including:
– Lori-Ann Murphy, who guided Leigh Perkins (owner and chairman of Orvis) and also was an adviser on the Kevin Bacon/Meryl Streep movie, The River Wild
– Fred Telleen, who guides for giant rainbows on the Kenai River in Alaska
– Rachel Finn, who uses her Master in Fine Arts degree from Yale for understanding the nuances of fly fishing
And guides stories are only part of the content. Fly tying recipes, ranging from the Ausable Bomber to the UV Groovy Bunny Sculpin are also included. All of the step by step fly patterns were recreated and photographed by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard.
The Fishing Gods is a quick and enjoyable read, filled with over 500 years of experience.
