Had a great opportunity to spend the morning of Father’s Day teaching fly casting and fishing with breast cancer survivors. I learned about this outreach through the local chapter of Casting For Recovery.
One of the local residents, who just happened to own a large pond stocked with bass and panfish, allowed us to fish on his property. For about 3 hours, I worked with a first-time fly fisher, ultimately landing a nice bluegill on a popper.
If you are not familiar with this organization, CFR provides an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a natural setting and learn the sport of fly fishing. The weekend retreats offer an opportunity to meet new friends, network, exchange information, and have fun.
Here is one of the best Father’s Day gifts I received.
If you have a chance, I would encourage you to work with an organization such as CFR, or one of the other groups that combines fly fishing and therapy. You will get as much out of it as the participants, if not more . Enjoy!
