While it seems like dry fly fishing may be a ways off for most of us, the opportunity to load the box for 2017 is here.
Here are 3 patterns that have worked for me this year:
Sulphur Gnat – Jim Misiura is easily one of the best tyers on YouTube and regularly posts a wide variety of fly types. He is one of the first that I followed. I’ve since tied and used many of his patterns.
This fly was an early season winner in sizes 18 and 20, and put many large rainbows and browns in the net.
The Small Spinner – Davie McPhail is a master tyer, and this pattern came through on days when I couldn’t quite figure out what they were sipping. I tie this in sizes 20 and smaller, with a black or wine red thread body. My guess is that olive and yellow might work too. Add it to your box and try it out when the rusty and sulphur spinners aren’t working.
If I only had to pick one, this Peacock Caddis from Danzchannel would be my choice. It’s simple, easy and deadly in sizes 14 – 18. I’ve used it successfully in both warm and cold water.
This will probably be my last post for 2016, so Thanks to All who have read and replied to Finfollower. We wish you and your family a Happy and Safe Holiday Season and a prosperous New Year. Enjoy!
