Hit the local trout stream last evening, hoping that the recent drop in temps from the 80’s to the 70’s would be enough to encourage better trout fishing. What I found instead were two large pockets of panfish that were hungry for the nymph that I was throwing.
I’d like to say that these are bluegill, but the long ears on the gills, red eyes and bright colors make me think they’re a relative, but not a bluegill.
What are these?
Enjoy!

Well Leigh…they’re fish. Doesn’t really matter what type. I’d settle for cardboard cutouts right about now.

After Irene’s passage last night, I don’t know how much fishing I’ll be doing for a while. Most streams are blown out and I’m sure the lakes and ponds are in similar condition.

They are long eared sunfish. Great fighters and a stunning fish regarding their color.

Thanks – that’s what I thought. The colors are stunning, and I wondered if it was due to the fact that they are river fish as opposed to living in ponds and lakes. I’m going back for more later this week!

I think they are actually Redbreast sunfish. Wonderful fighters and some of the most unique of the lepomis. Great catches!
