This past week we took a family vacation to Hammondsport, NY, which is located on Keuka Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. Besides spending time reconnecting with family, sampling the local wineries, and eating too much, we explored the area and took some great photos. Here are a few:

Evening Brown Trout
Due to my family, work and chores schedules, I’ve been fishing mostly in the mornings on the weekends before my wife and kids are awake, making it home in time for breakfast.
Last night I had a chance to get out and do some evening fishing with one of my good friends. We both landed some great fish, mostly browns, in a place that was new to both of us.
I stuck to dries, while he used dries and wets. He caught more. Go figure.
Enjoy!
Moving Pictures
Simms has done a good job of tying its products to fishing adventures. Regardless of whether you’re into salt or freshwater fly fishing, or prefer to chase bass, carp, redfish, trout or grayling, Simms has made a video about it.

Heading South
Each year we try to take a trip to Florida to see friends and family. We usually stay in the St. Augustine area, but this year we decided to rent a place on Amelia Island near the Florida/Georgia border. The town of Fernandina Beach is there, and has a rich history as a port and fishing village. Each year they host a Shrimp Festival that is definitely worth checking out. There are plenty of places to stay, beautiful beaches, and less traffic than in other Florida resort areas.
While I didn’t do any fishing (the only fish I saw was on a plate), I did keep up with my running program. Luckily the Egan’s Creek Greenway was nearby, and I was able to get up early enough to see some welcome and not-so-welcome sights. Enjoy!
Father’s Day Gift
This past winter I decided to build a fly rod for my father. Living in Florida, he has always enjoyed fishing in both fresh and salt water and I thought he might enjoy trying his hand at flyfishing as well.
Our annual trip to Florida coincided with Father’s Day, so I convinced my brother to buy the reel, an Albright 7wt. I took it to Cabelas and had it loaded with backing and 7wt. line and also purchased some bass leaders and tippet. I filled one of the fly boxes that I use for kayak fishing with an assortment of poppers, hairbugs, streamers and dry flies. I’ll introduce him to nymphing later.
On Father’s Day we presented him with the outfit and he really enjoyed it. Here are some pics of him with the rod and my attempt at giving him some flycasting lessons. Enjoy!
